Motor production in Kaluga arose after the Volkswagen Group has signed an investment agreement with the Ministry of Industry and Communist Party of the Russian Federation better known as Promsbork-2. Such similar agreements were signed with AvtoVAZ, Ford and General Motors. In essence, only AvtoVAZ and Volkswagen fulfilled the fully requirements of the «Promsbork-2» contract. According to the Agreement by the type «Promsbork-2», the automaker was obliged to increase production facilities for the production of cars up to 300-350 thousand pieces per year, to build a motor plant or transmissions so that the third car vehicle exit from the conveyor was equipped with these motors or transmissions.

But now in the history of Volkswagen in the Russian Federation a new page is open. In 2019, the German automaker signed a new special investment contract (SPIK) with the Ministry of Industry RF and the Government of the Kaluga region for a period of 10 years.

Investments planned in the development of Volkswagen production in the Russian Federation, one of the most ambitious. Will the model line of power aggregates of the German automaker produced in Russia be expanded? This question does not give this question. Recently, Volkswagen spoke about one novelty of the German brand — Volkswagen Taos crossover, however, in the aforementioned registry, this model is indicated as VW TAREK. In fact, TAREK / TAOS is a unified program of a car with the Czech crossover Skoda Karoq, produced today on contract assembly at the capacity of the Gas Group in Nizhny Novgorod. Here it is necessary to increase the capacity utilization. They are still not used enough, so, in 2019 the loading of the assembly site in Nizhny Novgorod was only 40%, while the VW head plant in Kaluga showed 67% load. The engine plant as a whole has been working for several years almost with full capacity utilization.

However, in addition to these models, new compact and large-sized SUVs of the concern VW are indicated in the Speaker Registry. Which models are hidden under these declared cars — it is not yet known. Apparently, the German concern booked the expansion of the model range for a longer perspective.

Diesel and vans

However, here, in Kaluga, another engine project started quite recently. In February of this year, the production of the French diesel engine Peugeot DV 6 began at the PSMA (Joint Enterprise Stellantis and Mitsubishi). Equipment for the production of engines is supplied to Russia from China. Also, recently, test stands have established test stands for testing the quality of the DV family of various environmental standards — EURO-5 and EURO-6.

Previously, diesel units with a capacity of 95 liters. with. Supplied in the finished form from the PSA plant in the French city of Tremier. The diesel engine of 1.6 liters will be installed on commercial cars of the brands of Peugeot, Citroen and Opel.

So far, no one revealed, what are the production facilities for the production of this diesel engine, what is the degree of its localization and prospects for the transition to Russian nodes and aggregates. Indeed, at the adjacent motor production Volkswagen produced power units are quite highly connected. Thus, the blocks of the cylinder and the heads of the blocks come from Ulyanovsk from the enterprise of Nemak, and the crankshaft comes from Naberezhnye Chelny from Kamaz. There is nothing in the French motor.

However, this project of the release of a light diesel engine is listed in the register of the Ministry of Industry, which was signed by the Peugeot French automaker in 2019, according to which, in addition to the organization of the release of diesel engines, cars on the platforms K0, T and in the French automaker PSA are indicated. Today, the French concern after the unification with Italo-American FCA (Fiat, Chrysler) was called Stellantis. In the model policy, the emporishes of the Kaluga enterprise PSMA Rus is made on a commercial line of cars.

The serial production of Citroen Berlingo freight vans, Peugeot Partner and Opel Combo began, and in April, the release of passenger versions of these models starts. Also on the conveyor French vans project K0 (Peugeot Expert and Citroen Jumpy, as well as their passenger variants of Peugeot Traveler and Citroen Space Tourer).

On the one hand, there is a risk that, focusing on the release of a commercial line, get unprofitable production for a long time, since these segments of junior models of commercial vehicles are not so popular in our LCV class. To this decision of the French automaker, there was a failure in the Russian market for single-platform passenger cars Peugeot-408 and Citroen C4, also produced in Kaluga at the PSMA Rus plant.

So, at the end of last year, 198 Peugeot-408 and 459 Citroen C4 cars were sold in Russia.
